What is palliative care?

Palliative care is a "philosophy" of care.  Palliative care is provided in many settings including residential care.  Specialist palliative care and support services are for people who have a life limiting illness.  this includes supporting your family/whanau and those close to you.

What is our role?

We provide a specialist consult palliative care service for people who live in residential care.  The rest home staff and GP will continue to provide your care.  We are available in the background for advice/support/assessment as needed.  We provide a 24/7 phone service for rest home staff which may assist with any issues that may arise.

Our aim is to work alongside rest home staff to ensure your care is tailored to your needs.  This includes all aspects of your care and symptom management including all aspects of your care and symptom management including emotional, physical, cultural and spiritual support.

What does it cost?

There is no charge for Hospice support.  Te Kahu Pairuri Hospice Taranaki provides palliative care support free of charge to all patients in the Taranaki Region

We can provide:

Specialist advice and support as needed in:

  • Nursing care
  • Medical management - support for your General Practitioner
  • Family support

Family support can include counselling and bereavement support/spiritual care and social work services for you and your family/whanau.

  • Carer and bereavement groups
  • Education and training to help others care for you
  • Maori Liaison
Ambulance Service Note

Ambulance services are provided by St John and often incur a cost.  Ask your Facility Manager is it is necessary for you to join the ambulance scheme.  When paying a small annual subscription of $55 you will receive free EMERGENCY ambulance cover.

When is Hospice available?

Hospice is available 24 hours a day / 7 days a week for advice and support if needed.  Please do not hesitate to get in touch.  The Residential Care Liaison Team are
