When people think of hospice care, they often picture a place.
But for many across Taranaki, hospice care is something that comes to them. From Pātea to Mokau, and inland to Whangamōmona, our patients are scattered across towns, farms, and remote roads. This year alone, we will care for around 650 people living with a terminal illness — and those who love them.
To reach them, our nurses, doctors and support teams don’t stay still. They travel.
Over the course of a year, we make more than 18,000 community visits, travelling approximately 117,700 kilometres. That’s thousands of moments of care — arriving at the right time, in the right place, when it matters most.
Because care is more than clinical.
It’s sitting beside someone and listening.
It’s helping manage pain so a person can rest.
It’s supporting whānau through some of life’s hardest days.
It’s delivering equipment that brings comfort, dignity, and reassurance into the home.
Every patient is different, and so is the care we provide — shaped around what matters most to them.
Behind every visit is a vehicle on the road.
Eight cars carry our nurses across the region. Three more support our wider team — social workers, counsellors, Kaiwhānau, and our pharmacist. Together, they ensure care reaches people wherever they are.
But keeping hospice care moving comes at a cost.
Fuel. Tyres. Servicing. WOFs. Repairs. Insurance. These are the practical realities behind every kilometre travelled — and every visit made.
Our care is free of charge. But it is not without cost.
